Zajímavosti kolem výuky (nejen) angličtiny

Why is language learning so difficult

Language learning seems too difficult. There are some objective reasons why. But still there are effective methods to overcome those obstacles. First I am about to explain what sort of the obstacles are.

Someone are convinced about importance of optical or visual methods. I think the auditory methods are even more important.

They are partially right those who are talking about importance of optical or visual channel in learning process. Else you couldn't read and write.

But the reason why the auditory method is more important I am going to clarify by example.

I know a man who is deaf since he had born. He is very, very
intelligent so he even graduated. He can speak but it takes a lot of
effort to understand him. He also can write not only in his mother language , he can also write in English but he hardly ever
will speak English.

And here is my analytical consideration.
You
have associated letters, words and even sentences and their sound or
acoustic image
deep in your brain. It is related to your native
language
. And whether you want or not while you read well known sounds
are popping up in your mind
. Right?

And as you only read in foreign language your
brain synthesizes those well known sounds, put them together while
reading and creates new images of the sound. But those are fake,
incorrect
ones.
And the more you read without listening the more you get them deep in your mind.
If you try to speak the process of bad learning even deepens.

Next
comes another effect. Suppose you hear or listen the word for the first
time
. In this case even your brain is not able to recognize it! You
want to ask "What? What did you say? Could you repeat it?"

More.
And
then even if you already get known the right pronunciation after
repeated listening you still pronounce it incorrectly from the same
reason.
So it takes a lot of time and repetition to overwrite those incorrect images in your brain.

I will go even further.
Why
it seems so difficult to learn new language especially if it is very
exotic for us (still I am talking about auditory form of the language)?

Simply.
When we hear some unknown sound our brain perceives it differently and
it offers us something what is similar to known sound pattern. It happens because of filter
that we have built to eliminate unknown sounds
which makes the process
of speech recognition effective. Remember how the brain filters
disturbing, insignificant sounds coming from our environment when we
talk
to each other to be able to understand each other.

So our
brain has to cope with difficult task which is to include new sounds to
its repertoire
and still effectively filter the other ones while
learning new language.

But our adult brain has advantages
compared to babies. We already are able to recognize human voice by
experience and we already have knowledge of the real world and much
more easily are able to assign words to their meaning.

So much for negative determination.

Now lets talk about the methods.

Listening First
As
you listen your brain learns how to recognize sounds of foreign
language. Baby has to learn how to differentiate your voice from other
sounds (did you notice that babies turn their head after each sound
they hear? Still has no idea what is important).
We adults have already the job done. Instead we have to learn new sounds and new meanings.
Which is as much demanding as if the babies have to learn to recognize speech of their parents.

Another advantage is that we already have developed our speech apparatus or machinery.

So why is still learning foreign language so difficult?
Because of our attitude, our believes and our negative experiences.

Silent period
And why is listening so important and why we must not speak from the beginning?
Hear I am talking about the silent period.

Well,
as we already know our brain offers us the image which is closest, most
similar to that well known
one when we are hearing a new word. And it
stores it and gives it its meaning. When listening the same next time
the brain make a little correction
and stores again creating neural
trajectories stronger
. Brian guesses the meaning and make corrections to approximate right meaning gradually.

If we were try to speak in this phase
surely we would develop bad, incorrect pronunciation. And brain would
store the incorrect pattern. And thank to addition of the next next
channel (the kinesthetic one while speaking) it would store it more deeply by creating
more neural connections.

And that's why it is important only to listen in the beginning.

And what about reading?
The
best is to read at he same time while listening after we have listened
the lesson one or two times. It powerfully helps to connect what we
listen with the text form. It also helps understanding.

But in the beginning the reading should make just 20% of the learning time. The rest should be listening.

After we have achieved avery good comprehension then we can start reading more.
In the beginning we use the easiest possible materials where there are two or three new words on one page.
The more new words the more searching in vocabulary and the less we can focus on the object.
